Reporter: Trade reindeer for lowriders — and Santa’s outfit, for a zootsuit and fedora, and you have the legend of Pancho Claus. It started in 1981 as a children’s play. It was a version of the night before Christmas. Reporter: But after the play, Richard Reyes started hearing stories of kids in his community who were too sad to be happy about Christmas. Telling me these sad stories about families in need. Reporter: So Reyes decided to turn fiction into reality, making sure kids who needed cris most, had something to celebrate. Pancho Claus helping children for nearly 40 years hit some setbacks. He says he suffered two heart attacks and that corporate donations fizzled after hurricane Harvey. Thank you. Feliz navidad. Reporter: But he’s not letting that show him down. He’s set up a go fund me page and making a public appeal. We’re really depending on people bringing toys to us. We’re doubling our efforts of getting toy boxes to different locations. We’ll just see what happens with the grace of god.
