A man wanted in the 2017 murder of his ex-girlfriend in Weymouth, Massachusetts, has been arrested in Florida, authorities said.
Cornell Bell, 48, was captured Wednesday in Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police said.
Bell was wanted in the death of 33-year-old Michele Clarke, whose body was found in her Weymouth apartment in August 2017. Police soon afterward announced they were looking for her ex-boyfriend, identified as Kerrol Florizel Bailey — one of multiple names Bell has allegedly used. He was living in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood at the time.
Bell took off in Clarke’s pickup truck, which was ultimately found abandoned in the Miami area, according to Norfolk DA Michael Morrissey.
“Florida has been a focus of our investigation and search, but it has included other areas, as well,” Morrissey said in a statement Wednesday.
U.S. Marshals confronted Bell Wednesday morning at a construction site in Dania Beach. He was arrested “after a brief pursuit,” Morrissey said.
Bell faces a murder charge in Clarke’s death. Under the name of Cavin Lebert, Bell also has a warrant for charges of armed assault to murder, armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, state police said.
Officials in Massachusetts and Florida are working to arrange Bell’s return to the Bay State. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.
